We believe that understanding ourselves and how we relate to others is important in thinking about what we bring to our work and allows us to maintain our own personal wellbeing. You may notice recurring patterns within your working practices which leave you experiencing stress or a sense of stuckness.
Personal reformulation can be helpful within many professions, but particularly when working within helping professions, such as nurses, doctors, clinical, forensic or counselling psychologists, and charity/not-for-profit organisations. You may consider personal reformulation as a trainee clinical psychologist.
At the centre of personal reformulation is the development of your own ‘here and now’ CAT (cognitive-analytic) map which illustrates the unhelpful patterns you can find yourself caught in within your working practices. This enables you to build recognition of when these patterns arise for you. This then allows us to look at opportunities to exit these patterns. This becomes a tool for you to take away and continue working on your personal goals e.g. to feel more confident presenting your ideas at work, to be able to leave work at work, holding boundaries and feeling able to say ‘no’ when needed.
Personal reformulation takes part over two hourly sessions. There is the option of a follow-up session approximately 1-2 months later to review your progress and to consider next steps for building on this.
Personal reformulation is not personal therapy and does not require you to have a working knowledge of CAT. Understandably, there is a natural overlap between what we bring to work and our life outside of work. There is the option to pursue personal therapy if that feels like a beneficial step for you.
